|The IIT Guwahati has been established in the year 1994 and is one of the premier institutes of the country especially in the realm of under graduate teachings in science, engineering and technology. The beautiful campus of the IIT Guwahati is set up on a 3 sq. km land and within the serene surroundings of north bank of the Brahmaputra. The IIT Guwahati is also called as the IIT G.
The Indian Institute of Technology, Guwahati is a product of the ĎAssam Accordí signed between the government of Assam and the All Assam Students Union. This agreement proposed the need of setting up of an IIT in the area besides other developmental schemes to be materialized in the region.
The various departments of the IIT Guwahati that attracts students across the various levels are as follows:

- Electronics & Communication Engineering
- Humanities and Social Sciences

There are about 500 post graduates and 1300 undergraduates taking pride in being associated with the IIT Guwahati, at any given time. The mode of selection is similar to that of the remaining IITís in the country. The various competitive exams have to be cleared (different for the different levels) to secure a seat into any of the courses/ programmes offered here.
Students of the IIT Guwahati are housed in the below mentioned residential halls and hostels. It is interesting to note that each of the hostels has been named after a significant element of the state, be it a wildlife sanctuary or an enormous river. The names of the halls are as:
Other than its academic records, the IIT Guwahati is also famous for its science and technology festival and cultural festival that are held at the national level and attracts thousands of participators and spectators to its midst.
