|India is a great seat of learning and the various universities housed in its midst, especially reiterate this fact. The Banaras Hindu University is one of the leading institutes in the country and is the largest residential university in Asia. It houses in its midst more than 128 independent teaching departments and several of its departments are also reputed to be the best in the country. The Banaras Hindu University attracts students from all over India, especially for its ‘Indian ness’ reflected through the traditions and heritage housed here.
The BHU consists of the 3 prestigious institutes, each dedicated to Agricultural Sciences, Medical Sciences and Technology respectively. Besides being known for its quality education, the university is also well known for being the pioneer in paving the path for management studies in India, way back in the 1960’s.
The BHU is primarily the brainchild of Pandit Madan Mohan Malviya and Annie Besant who combined their forces and expertise to come up with a centralized Hindu University in Varanasi (Banaras). It has been functioning as a University since 1917 with several of its branches namely the College of Oriental learning and Theology and Teachers’ Training College being opened subsequently.
The Banaras Hindu University Library system is the largest library system in India and braches out from a central library at the apex to the Institute libraries, Faculty libraries and departmental libraries to cater to the needs of the students, faculties and technical staff of the university.
