|The Indian Institute of Technology Bombay is also popularly known as IIT – B, owing to the fact that Bombay was previously called Bombay. It is located in Powai, about 30 kms from the city centre of Bombay and is the largest national institute in Maharashtra. The IIT Bombay was established in 1958 as the second institute of the 7 other top engineering institutes in the country. UNESCO and the erstwhile Soviet Union contributed greatly to the setting up of this institute and the 550 acres land was given by the then state government of Bombay.
