NITs (National Institute of Technology) are top Engineering colleges in India. Previously they were called as Regional Engineering Colleges (RECs). There were 17 RECs previously.
In 2002, The Ministry of HRD (Human Resource Development), Government of India, upgraded all the original 17 Regional Engineering Colleges (RECs) as National Institutes of Technology (NITs). Currently there are 20 NITs which are located in different states in India.
These institutes are rated just after the IITs in India. These colleges offers degrees like BE / B.Tech. / M.Tech and Ph.D. in various courses like Applied Sciences, Computer Science, Electronics and Communication, Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering and many others branches.
For different NITs there are specific Eligibility Criteria for admission. 50% seats are reserved for students of the state in which the institute is located.
